Kawambwa Town Council Chairperson Kalumba Chifumbe says constructing a new raw intake line that will run parallel to the old line and rehabilitating the old raw intake line is the only solution to improving the erratic water supply that the district has been experiencing.
He says currently the district only has one supply line from the raw intake to the treatment plant which is about 5.5 kilometers, hence the need to construct another new raw intake line to boost water supply to the main treatment plant..
The Council Chairperson was speaking during the visit of Luapula Water and Sewerage Company Raw centre and treatment plant, where he emphasized on the need to replace the pipes on some sections and other installations such as wash-out valves and air R-valves.
Mr. Chifumbe stated that the advantage of transportation of water from the source to the treatment plant is by gravity, adding that once this primary objective is achieved, the district will have a stable supply of water.
He disclosed that a total amount of K4 million was required to have all the works done and restore the stable supply of water, further revealing that only one collection water chamber was operational resulting in erratic water supply to the consumers in the District.
The Council Chairperson urged the engineers from the Local Authority to work hand in hand with engineers from Luapula Water Company and see to it that the works are expedited, further disclosing that consultations were being instituted on how best Constituency Development Fund could be utilized to solve this water challenge.
Mr. Chifumbe appealed to the residents in the district to remain calm, as everything possible was being done to address the water challenge, further urging the public to stop agricultural activities at the water source area as the area was a recharge zone.
