Luangwa Town Council recently held a consultative meeting with various stakeholders to discuss a Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP).
The aim was to gather diverse ideas on how waste management can be effectively handled in both the Central Business District (CBD) and residential areas of Luangwa District.
To prioritize the well-being of the community, cleaner and well-managed environments are essential for improving residents’ quality of life, reducing nuisances such as odours, littering, and promoting public health.
During the meeting, Council Chairman Mr. Lawrence Shaba emphasized that all the inputs highlighted by the stakeholders should be implemented promptly, urging that no time be wasted in taking action.
He further explained that solid waste management involves the regular and timely collection, transportation, and proper disposal of solid waste in a systematic manner.
In addition, the Director of Finance Department Mr. Wenga Banda, who was acting Council Secretary, highlighted the critical role of waste management in society.
He warned that improper management could pose serious risks, such as the spread of diseases like cholera, which tends to afflict larger cities, especially during the rain season.
Mr. Wenga Banda also noted that the SWMP would run from 2025 to 2027, and he encouraged all stakeholders to submit their input before the plan is finalized and included in the 2025 budget proposal.
