The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has taken note of concerns raised by the public regarding the maintenance and fuel costs associated with running 750Kva diesel-powered generators installed by ZESCO in some of the LCC-run Markets.
In a statement today, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba clarified that it is not responsible for procuring or operating these generators, as they are managed by ZESCO as part of their business operations.
She since acknowledged the significant financial implications of running these generators. However, it is essential for the public to understand that this initiative is a business venture by ZESCO aimed at sustaining their operations amidst the current power deficit.
Ms. Mwamba said users of these generators will still pay for the electricity consumed, similar to metered electricity.
“As the local authority, our primary focus remains on providing essential services to traders in these markets, with key areas of focus being market management and ensuring markets operate efficiently and effectively. By prioritizing these areas, we aim to create a conducive environment for traders to thrive while also promoting the overall well-being of Lusaka residents. The City Council remains committed to delivering quality services and improving the lives of our citizens.” she said
And Ms. Mwamba commended ZESCO for this initiative which will enable traders to conduct business without power interruptions and fulfill their obligations to the Council.
She said this will in turn enable the Council to provide traders with necessary amenities like running water in markets, enhancing their overall trading experience and promoting economic growth.
The Lusaka City Council Public Relations Manager further urged marketeers and the public to exhibit a culture of responsibility by safeguarding these public assets, as vandalism will result in significant losses to the community and the nation.
