RECALLED METFORMIN DRUG WAS NOT PROCURED AND DISTRIBUTED BY ZAMMSA.

The Zambia Medicines Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has clarified that the recently recalled drug, Metformin Tablets, by Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) was not procured nor distributed by ZAMMSA.

In a statement today 13th December, 2023, ZAMMSA Senior Public Relations Manager Bradley Chingobe said the agency is reliably informed that on the 10th December 2023, ZAMRA recalled Metformin Tablets 500 Milligrams Batch number KBT018 which was supplied by Yash Pharmaceuticals company and manufactured by Bliss GVS Pharma PVT Limited of India.

And Mr. Chingobe explained that ZAMMSA has a long framework contract with suppliers for the same drug.

He has since assured the nation that there are no issues with the conformity of Metformin procured, stored and distributed by ZAMMSA, affirming that all the Metformin that is being distributed by ZAMMSA is safe for consumption.

“As per standard operating procedure, all the medicines procured by ZAMMSA are subjected to a pre-distribution Quality Control assessment by ZAMRA before they are dispatched to the public health facilities across the country.”

“ZAMMSA remains fully committed to providing safe, cost effective and quality medicines and medical supplies.” Mr. Chingobe said
