Kawambwa Town Council Chairperson Kalumba Chifumbe has appealed to communities around Chansa Malamba and Kalembwe areas in Kawambwa Central Constituency to make use of the newly constructed Weirs and irrigation canals by the Transforming Landscapes for Resilience and Development (TRALARD) by expanding their agricultural activities.
He says the projects that have cost K 11 Million are aimed at enhancing the farming activities in those areas, adding that this is the only way the district can become the food basket of the nation.
Mr. Chifumbe was speaking during the inspection of the TRALARD projects being constructed in Kawambwa Central Constituency where he expressed happiness on the quality of works being carried out in the district.
The Council Chairperson stated that time had come for the people in the district to take agriculture as a serious commercial venture, especially that the district was endowed with favourable rain pattern and fertile soil.
He said with the country experiencing droughts in most parts due to climate change, it was important for people in the Northern part to engage in various farming activities and double the food production at all cost.
Mr. Chifumbe revealed that plans were underway for the Local Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture to conduct massive senstisations around the district on how farmers could make use of the newly constructed Weirs and irrigation canals.
The Council Chairperson urged the contractors to engage the local communities in the area of human resource by employing them as they execute the project..
And Kawambwa Town Council Secretary Andrew Bwali said the construction of the multi million weirs and irrigation canals in Chansa Malamba and Kalembwe could not have come at a better time than this, as they were aimed at improving livelihoods of the communities in those areas.
Mr. Bwali said that the TRALARD projects were going to provide alot of opportunities such as fish farming and several agricultural activities that would bring wealthy among the communities.
He urged the communities of Chansa Malamba and Kalembwe venture in animal rearing, fish farming and horticultural farming, further appealing for the protection of the weirs and irrigation canals against possible vandalism.
Transforming Landscapes for Resilience and Development is a project funded by the World Bank under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment whose aim is to improve livelihoods.
