CONVICTION OF JACKSON CHAMA FOR HATE SPEECH

The Zambia Police Service has announced the successful conviction of Jackson Chama for the offense of Hate Speech.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga said Mr. Jackson Chama was apprehended in Lusaka and subsequently transferred to Kalomo, where the Docket of Hate Speech, contrary to Section 65 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act of 2021, was opened.

He said on March 13, 2024, Mr. Chama, aged 30 of House number 238 Makeni, appeared for plea before Honourable Mooya for the Offense of Hate Speech and pleaded guilty to the Charge.

And Mr. Hamoonga said today, March 18, 2024, the matter proceeded to the sentencing phase, and Mr. Chama has been convicted to serve One Year Imprisonment with hard Labour, effective from February17, 2024. He has been remanded at the Kalomo Correctional Service facility.

Mr. Hamoonga said additionally, the cell phone used to disseminate the hateful content on social media has been forfeited to the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer said an order has been issued for its sale at auction, with the proceeds to be deposited into the Government Revenue account.

He said the Zambia Police Service reiterates its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that perpetrators of hate speech are brought to justice.

And Mr. Hamoonga encouraged all citizens to use social media responsibly and refrain from spreading hate speech or any form of discrimination.
