The Chirundu Town Council (CTC) in Southern Province has handed over a total of 1,510 desks valued at K2, 219, 700 million to 12 schools in the district.
CTC Council Secretary Embassy Cheembo said that this has been financially supported by the 2022 and 2023 Constituency Development Fund (CDF), to ensure that no child sits on the floor as they attain education.
Mr. Cheembo said this is in line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive that no child should sit on floor whilst acquiring education.
He said this instruction is also aimed at empowering small businesses such as carpentry and welding as the desks are to be made locally opposed to being imported.
“Government through Chirundu Council remains resolute towards delivering quality education by ensuring no child sits on the floor to attain education,” he added.
Mr. Cheembo expressed commitment towards Government’s policy to supply desks around the Constituency in order to cater for all school going children.
“We are committed to ensuring that we meet our target of delivering desks to the schools that are in dire need of desks to ensure that no child sits on the floor whilst learning,” he said.
Mr. Cheembo stated that the CDF Committee settled for 925 desks to be distributed under 2022 CDF in different schools and 585 desks to be distributed under the 2023 CDF allocation.
He disclosed that the local authority has so far distributed 780 desks out of the 925 to 8 schools for the year 2022 and will soon commence with the 2023 distribution as it finalizes distributing those for the year 2022.
“The schools that have already received desks include Pembele Primary School 100, Hamunjo Community School 100, Siabulembo Community School 100, Chiwena Community School 80 and T-Junction Primary School 100,” Mr. Cheembo acknowledged.
He identified others as Ibbwemunyama Secondary School 100, Siangwemu Primary School 100 and Kayuni Primary school 100.
Mr. Cheembo said CTC said that the council is keen to supplement efforts being made to improve the education system in Chirundu District by making sure children are learning in conducive environments.
He said the local authority is working in line with Government’s vision to ensure marginalised communities have access to quality education.
And the schools that have received desks are overwhelmed with joy and expressed gratitude towards the government’s efforts to curb challenges that affect learners.
