Lusaka, December 28, 2023 –
Police in Mtendere has arrested and charged Bright Phiri aged 55 of Petauke District in Eastern Province for offences of five counts of Obtaining Money by False Pretenses amounting to K20, 560=00 and one count of Impersonation.
In a statement, Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the incidents occurred between November 7, 2023 and December 23, 2023 in Mutendere township of Lusaka.
Mr. Hamoonga noted that brief facts of the matter are that Simon Phiri aged 51 of house number A271 Mutendere Township reported on behalf of five other family friends who were swindled of their money amounting to K20, 560=00 by Bright Phiri aged 55, his Childhood friend of Petauke District in Eastern Province.
He said the suspect is an Ex-convict had visited the reporter’s home in Mutendere township and were he duped the victims by claiming that he had connections with New Dawn Government and that he was working with a named Cabinet Minister when in fact not.
Mr. Hamoonga stated that the suspect further claimed that he was going to facilitate the opening of a company of buying motor vehicles and buy a house in Meanwood area due to the connections he has.
The Police spokesperson said the suspect later told the victim to deposit money in an Airtel mobile account which he claimed belonged to the Minister when in fact not.
He said the suspect is currently detained in Police Custody and will appear in Court soon.
