ZAMBIA SUGAR ASSURES GOVERNMENT OF NO RETRENCHMENT AS ZESCO REDUCES POWER SUPPLY BY 50%

Zambia Sugar has assured government that it will not fire any of it’s 7,200 workers when ZESCO starts reducing power supply to the agro firm next week.

Zambia Sugar Managing Director Oswald Magwenzi says the sugar firm has opted to import power in order to maintain its productivity and maintain all it’s workers

Mr. Magwenzi says importation of power is costly but the firm will go ahead because the current drought the country is undergoing is understandable .

Speaking at Nakambala House in Mazabuka District when Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati paid a courtesy call on him, Mr. Magwenzi said no single employee will lose their job during this period.

He revealed that ZESCO had informed Zambia Sugar that power supply will be reduced by half starting next week.

Meanwhile, Mr. Magwenzi has assured government that the firm will support the Ministry of Technology and Science as it prepares to host the World Skills Africa Competition in Livingstone in April 2025.

Mr. Magwenzi says as a corporate citizen, Zambia Sugar will support the competition in whichever way possible to ensure it is successfully hosted.

And Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati thanked Zambia Sugar for the assurance that no worker will lose their job during the period of power deficit.

Hon. Mutati also thanked the company for partnering with the Ministry to prepare for the World Skills Africa Competition.

The Minister explained that in April next year, Livingstone will play host to hundreds of youths from the continent who will showcase their skills at the competition.

Hon. Mutati said Zambia Sugar has various skilled people who can help Zambian competitors sharpen their skills ahead of the event.

He said Zambian youths will compete in 20 skills and they need to be mentored by professionals in the industry, some of whom can be found at Zambia Sugar.

Mazabuka Mayor Vincent Lilanda and Mazabuka District Commissioner Oliver Mulomba accompanied Mr. Mutati to the meeting.
