MINISTERIAL TEAM TO VISIT HYDROPOWER STATIONS

Lusaka, Zambia – 23 May 2024 –

The Board and Management of ZESCO Limited would like to inform the nation that a delegation of three Cabinet Ministers will tour ZESCO’s hydropower stations on Friday, 24 May 2024.

The purpose of the visit is to appreciate, first-hand, the impact of reduced water levels on electricity generation at these facilities.

The Cabinet Ministers participating in the visit are: Hon. Eng. Peter Kapala (MP), Minister of Energy, Hon. Mike Mposha (MP), Minister of Water Development and Sanitation and Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa (MP), Minister of Information and Media.

The tour will focus on two key hydropower stations. The Kafue Gorge Power Station in Namalundu with an installed 990MW generation capacity and Kariba North Bank Complex in Siavonga with an installed generation capacity of 1080MW.

This visit comes amid Zambia’s current power deficit, caused by critically low water levels in hydropower generation reservoirs. The severe drought, attributed to El Nino, has significantly impacted electricity generation.

As of 19 May 2024, the country’s power deficit stands at 750MW, as announced by the Government. Following the visit, the Minister of Energy will address the media and the nation, with a comprehensive statement.

This statement will update the current hydropower situation and mitigation steps that the government is taking to address energy sufficiency and reliability in the immediate, short, medium and long term.

The ZESCO Board and Management would like to thank the nation for its patience in these difficult times.
