ZAMBIA & BURUNDI STRENGTHEN BILATERAL TIES DURING STATE VISIT

LUSAKA – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has commended Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye and his accompanying ministers for their visit to Zambia. President Hichilema highlighted that the bilateral ties between the two countries are not only bound by geographic proximity but also by shared languages and cultures.

The bilateral agreement signed during the visit aims to deepen cooperation between Zambia and Burundi in key sectors such as trade, agriculture, and transport and communication. President Hichilema emphasized the importance of continued efforts towards peace and stability within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to accelerate economic development across the region.

President Ndayishimiye expressed his gratitude to President Hichilema and the Zambian people for the warm welcome extended to him and his delegation. He remarked on the strong common values of respect shared between Zambia and Burundi, which have fostered a good cooperative relationship between the two nations.

The state visit was aimed at enhancing mutual commitments and exploring new areas of cooperation. President Ndayishimiye discussed the importance of championing sustainable economic development through skills and business initiatives, which would have a trickle-down effect on improving the welfare of the people.

Both leaders underscored the need for exchanging ideas and experiences in agriculture, trade, tourism, and mining. President Ndayishimiye acknowledged the significant support that Zambia has provided towards maintaining stability in the SADC region.

In addition, President Ndayishimiye congratulated President Hichilema on the successful conduct of the 2024 SADC summit. He appreciated Zambia’s unwavering support and active role in fostering stability and economic growth within SADC nations.

Zambia and Burundi continue to enjoy warm and enduring bilateral relations, underpinned by shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to regional development and cooperation. The visit marks a significant step forward in strengthening the bonds between the two countries.

The event concluded by the signing of Memorandum of Understanding MoU in different areas such as Commercial Cooperation,Social welfare and Child Development Systems,Agriculture and agricultural research among others.
