NAMIBIA ENDORSES ZAMBIA’S CANDIDATE FOR INTERPOL TOP POSITION

After a strategic and extensive campaign covering Turkiye, Egypt, Nigeria and Namibia, the team spearheading Zambia’s candidate for the position of INTERPOL Secretary General has successfully concluded its mission with an assurance from neighbouring Namibia.

The team is led by Ambassador Lazarus Kapambwe, the Special Envoy to the President of the Republic of Zambia. Deputy Commissioner of Police Mubita Nawa is vying for the position of Secretary General of INTERPOL

While in Namibia the team met Honourable Albert KAWANA, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Minister Kawana was flanked by the Interpol Executive Committee Member – Delegate for Africa, Major General Anna-Marie Nainda who is also the Deputy Inspector General of police together with senior officials from the Namibian Police Force.

Minister Kawana re-affirmed Namibia’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s candidature in line with the already secured SADC and African Union (AU) endorsements.

Earlier, the team held fruitful meetings with Mr. AvShalom NGHIFITIKEKO Director International and Regional Coordination at the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation of Namibia.

Mr. Nghifitikeko echoed that just like the Sustainable Development Goals, implementation strategy of not leaving anyone behind should be applied in Interpol. The none participation of Africa and other regions of interpol at a strategic level was an inequality that needed to be addressed if the organisation is to fully benefit from the diversity of its Member States.

Mr. Nawa’s candidacy provides an opportunity for Interpol to undertake meaningful structural reforms. This will enable the organisation to fully accommodate the rest of its regions whose participation has been minimal at a strategic level as well as in the utilisation of the available wide range of policing capabilities.

The end of the tour is just in time for the interviews for the position of Interpol Secretary General to be conducted towards the end of June in Lyon, France.

Those vying for this prestigious global law enforcement position are Faisal Shahkar of Pakistan, Valdecy Urquiza of Brazil , Stephen Kavanaugh of the United Kingdom, and Mubita Nawa of Zambia 🇿.

Statement issued by Lloyd Himaambo.
