The Lusaka City Council – LCC has noted with displeasure that some council workers are dubiously collecting money from business owners despite them not being revenue collectors.
In a statement, LCC Public Relations Officer Nyambe Bulumba said most targeted in this scam are both local and foreign business owners who have been running businesses without documentation from the Local Authority.
Bulumba said said unscrupulous council individuals target business owners without documentation such as Business Permits, Fire Certificates, Business Levy among others and charge them exorbitantly in the pretext of not having their business ventures closed.
The LCC Public Relations Officer said this illegality is depriving the Council of the much needed revenue to go towards timely service delivery and payment of salaries among others.
Bulumba said Council will not hesitate to invoke the available legal provisions and close down business entities that are paying levy to none authorized officers.
“We are however, instituting investigations into the matter to ensure that culprits are brought to book.”
“The Local Authority is strongly warning people involved in this act to immediately stop before the law catches up on them.”
“business owners are therefore, advised to always demand for receipts from our officers anytime they are making payments.”
“The Local Authority is further appealing to business owners to cooperate with our Revenue Task Force Team to avoid being inconvenienced.” Bulumba said
