Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati has disclosed that the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector contributed 2.6 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country in the third quarter of 2023.
Mr. Mutati says the ICT sector grew by 5.1 percent which is similar to the growth rate recorded in the second quarter of the same year.
The Minister says the massive investment done in the sector by government and the private sector has enhanced productivity and efficiency across other industries.
Hon. Mutati said this last night on ZNBC TV1 when he addressed the nation on the eve of the 2024 Commemoration of the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day which falls today under the theme Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development.
“This day reminds us of the critical role that Telecommunications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play in driving economic growth and development. It is also a celebration of the continuous evolution that have reshaped the way we communicate, learn, work and live,” said Hon. Mutati.
The Minister acknowledged the growth of the ICT sector saying it is beneficial to citizens.
Hon. Mutati said in the past year, the country witnessed rapid growth in the ICT sector especially towards digital transformation.
He said there has been an increase in the use of digital tools and platforms as businesses and individuals adapt to the changing landscape.
“The Government of His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, remains committed to creating an enabling environment for the telecommunications and information industry to thrive. We shall continue to invest in the expansion of broadband infrastructure and support innovation in the sector. After all, evidence shows that Economic activity in the country has continued to grow as reflected by the positive increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023,” he said.
