Lusaka, Sunday 10th March, 2024.

Senior Chief Chiwala of the Lamba-speaking people of Masaiti District on the Copperbelt has commended the ongoing partnership with the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), highlighting its active role in advocating against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), drug abuse, and the illegal brewing of Kachasu (local alcoholic beverage), which he identified as threats to peace and stability in his chiefdom.

He expressed gratitude for the Commission’s various initiatives in ensuring outreach to remote areas, leaving no one behind and expressed his appreciation for their commitment to engaging traditional leaders in the fight against illicit drugs, substance abuse, and money laundering,

The traditional leader urged the government to strengthen security along the porous border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, citing concerns about potential criminal activity.

Meanwhile, DEC’s Copperbelt Regional Commander, Mr. Joseph Kaluzi, has commended the Chief’s dedication to fighting social ills demonstrated by His Royal Highness’s confiscation of containers filled with Molasses from his chiefdom, the main ingredient used in the brewing of Kachasu and other illicit substances.

Mr Kaluzi said this aligns well with DEC’s Director General Mr Nason Banda’s Vision on the importance of continued collaboration with all traditional leaders in the fight against drugs, substance abuse, and money laundering. He expressed gratitude for the Chief’s support and cooperation in the Commission’s ongoing efforts within the chiefdom.

This was said when a DEC delegation led by Mr Kaluzi met with the Senior Chief to discuss the drug situation in the district and explore collaborative efforts to achieve a drug-free chiefdom.

This engagement signifies the DEC’s commitment to a multi-pronged approach to tackling drug trafficking and abuse, recognizing the vital role of traditional leaders in promoting community awareness and cooperation.
