Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr Thabo Kawana says there is need for collaborative efforts among developing countries to make investments towards increasing the use of Artificial Intelligence technologies.

Mr Kawana was speaking at a high-level side event titled ‘Role of Artificial Intelligence in Achieving Food Security and Poverty Alleviation: Investing in a Safe, Nutritious and Resilient Food System’ which was co-sponsored by Zambia, the United States of America, the Kingdom of Morocco, the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa, among others.

The event was held on the margins of the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Mr. Kawana appealed to cooperating partners to support countries like Zambia in increasing investments in Artificial Intelligence.

“These investments should include technologies for data collection and management, computing technologies, Artificial Intelligence software technologies, and other Artificial Intelligence related technologies, including early warning systems,” Mr. Kawana said.

He added that Artificial Intelligence can play an integral part in the development of early warning systems and climate change adaptation strategies prolonged dry spell leading to droespecially in light of Zambia’s recent experience with prolonged dry spells and droughts.

The Permanent Secretary said by investing in AI solutions, the country can create a safer, more nutritious, and resilient food system benefiting all individuals in the country.
