President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says Zambia needs to start producing cholera vaccines so that the disease can easily be contained.

Speaking at a media briefing at Community House, President HICHILEMA said Government will do everything possible to ensure the vaccine is made available to eradicate cholera.

He also announced that painful and expensive measures will be taken to ensure that Cholera does not break out in the country in future.

President HICHILEMA said roads and drainages will be constructed in compounds at all cost in order for access to be created for emergency services.

He said the current situation where certain compounds have no roads or drainages makes them a breeding ground for Cholera.

The Head of State also directed that all new settlements must be serviced with water, roads and drainages before they are allocated to people.

Meanwhile, President HICHILEMA’s Health Advisor ROMA CHILENGI said one million doses of the Cholera vaccines are expected in the country on January 14, 2024 to fight the Cholera outbreak.

Professor CHILENGI said the World Health Organisation –WHO- has provided the doses following the disease outbreak.

And Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO said she will invoke the Public Health Act tomorrow in order to bring in measures to control the Cholera outbreak.

Mrs. MASEBO said by invoking the Public Health Act, she will be able to introduce measures to enforce the laws to prevent Cholera.

She also announced that President HICHILEMA will tomorrow visit the National Cholera Treatment Centre at the National Heroes Stadium and other Cholera treatment centres in Lusaka to appreciate the work of the response team.

Mrs. MASEBO also disclosed that Rufunsa District has recorded four cholera deaths.
