Chilanga, 17th July 2024,
Chilanga Cement, through its ECO Unit waste management brand, continues to commemorate Plastic Free July with Parklands School in Chilanga District, addressing plastic waste pollution through innovative environmental educational activities.
This initiative aligns with Chilanga Cement’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Speaking during the school’s prize-giving ceremony, Chilanga Member of Parliament Honorable Sipho Hlazo remarked that plastic waste pollution is one of the significant challenges facing the Chilanga constituency.
Most of the waste collected is often taken to the dumpsite and burnt, posing an environmental hazard.
“We commend Chilanga Cement for their efforts in driving a mindset change among learners, encouraging the community to view plastic waste as a resource and to ensure recyclable waste is sorted at the source,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chilanga District Commissioner Mr. David Sheleni encouraged Chilanga Cement to partner with more schools to enhance efforts in promoting a circular economy and engaging the younger generation in environmental stewardship. “I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you – students, teachers, and our partners at Chilanga Cement,” he remarked.
Head of the ECO Unit, Mrs. Claire Chibesakunda, emphasized that the collaboration with schools in the plastic waste management program aims to educate students about the importance of recycling and environmental conservation.
“This partnership has not only empowered students with knowledge about the impact of plastic pollution but has also inspired them to spread the message of waste segregation and plastic pollution in our communities,” she said.
Chilanga Cement Plant Manager, Mr. Jun Zhao, encouraged everyone to be mindful of plastic consumption, to advocate for environmentally friendly practices, and to inspire others to join in protecting our planet.
In her vote of thanks, School Head Teacher Mrs. Simposya thanked the pupils and teachers for their commitment, which involved collecting plastic waste and organizing events such as the Spelling Bee and Debate.
She emphasized that small actions can lead to significant positive impacts.
This partnership is a testament to Chilanga Cement’s ongoing dedication to sustainability and community collaboration.
By joining forces with Parklands Secondary School, Chilanga Cement hopes to create a model for other schools and companies to follow, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for Zambia.
