CHIENGE DISTRICT ROLLS OUT EMERGENCY WETLANDS FARMING SUPPORT PROGRAM

Government through the Chienge local authority has flagged off a massive distribution exercise of the “emergency wetlands farming support program” targeting over 2200 vulnerable farmers in Chienge district at a cost of over 450, 000 kwacha.

Speaking when he flagged off the exercise at Puta Primary school grounds, this afternoon, Chienge Town Council Chairperson Francis Mwanto says the exercise is part of the government’s broader effort to promote social welfare and community development.

Mr. Mwanto says the new dawn government is committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable agenda which he says is being demonstrated by the gesture shown by supporting the vulnerable farmers and other groups through various government programs such as the emergency wetlands farming support program.

The council chairperson says the government has decided to distribute the farming inputs early in order to encourage the farmers to plant their crops early and ensure that they are supported through out the farming season for the country to record another bumper harvest next year.

“We are committed to supporting our most vulnerable community members. This distribution drive is a proactive drive step towards ensuring their basic needs are met and their lives improved. This distribution drive is a testament to our dedication to their well – being and quality of life”. said Mr. Mwanto

Ministry of Community Development and Social Services District Community Development Offer Shinka Chanda (DCDO) says the exercise is targeting female headed households, households with children under the age of five, the vulnerable youth and vulnerable senior citizens (those above 65 years old).

He says about 1100 beneficiaries will receive a 5kg of rain fed maize seed, 50 KG D Compound fertilizer and 50 KG urea fertilizer while others will get vegetable seeds and the fertilizers. The exercise will cover the 15 wards of the district.
