Zambia assumes the position of First Vice Chairperson of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee –STC- on Social Development, Labour, and Employment.

Zambia has assumed the position of First Vice Chairperson of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee –STC- on Social Development, Labour, and Employment.

 

During the Fifth Ordinary Session of the STC held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Zambia was selected to represent the Southern region in the Bureau of the STC on Social Development, Labour, and Employment.

 

Others in the Bureau are Chad(Chairperson), and Uganda. The Northern and Western Regions have yet to nominate their representatives for the Bureau.

 

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Brenda Tambatamba expressed gratitude that Zambia had been nominated as 1st Vice Chairperson of the Bureau.

 

She said it was important for Africa to adopt strategies and policy measures at the continental and regional levels to enhance social development, labour, and employment.

 

The Minister was confident that the STC would consider concrete roadmaps aimed at implementing policies and strategies on social protection, the social and solidarity economy, labour migration, youth employment, child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation, and ending exploitation and abuse of children.

 

She said the STC would also receive knowledge products that would provide insights into the wage issues in Africa and the operationalization of dialogue mechanisms related to labour migration.

 

While in Addis Ababa, the Minister also visited the construction site for the New Embassy building scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.

 

In her address to the staff of the Embassy, the Minister said it was important to align all duties at the Mission to the 8th National Development Plan.

 

She further urged the Embassy staff to take advantage of the presence of other countries in Ethiopia to market Zambia’s Economic and Tourism potential.

 

Zambia Embassy Charge D’Affaifres Tom Michelo thanked the Minister for taking the time to visit the Embassy.

 

He assured the Minister that the staff at the Embassy were working hard to ensure that Zambia maximizes its benefits from the country of accreditation, the African Union, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa
