The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) successfully evacuated an 18-year-old mother from Kasempa District, Northwestern Province on 25th October,2025.
This was after a severe road accident left her with life-threatening injuries.
The young woman sustained critical injuries in a motorbike-truck collision resulting in a 20-centimeter open wound on her skull with a major depression and exposed brain tissue.
Further complicating her condition, she was pregnant at the time of the accident.
Upon her arrival at Mukinge Mission Hospital, doctors swiftly performed an emergency C-section, delivering a healthy baby boy, while her own condition remained critical.
Recognizing the urgent need for advanced neurosurgical care, Mukinge Mission Hospital’s Dr. David Friend requested assistance from the Ministry of Health (MOH) for the woman to be evacuated by ZFDS.
He noted that a specialized neurosurgical procedure to elevate the depressed skull was essential for her recovery.
In response, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Permanent Secretary for Technical Services at the MOH, authorized ZFDS to transport the patient to Lusaka, where a neurosurgical team awaited her at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
The ZFDS plane, staffed with paramedics and a medical doctor, departed from Ndola, landing at Mukinge Airstrip at 13:20 hours.
The team stabilized the patient for her journey and transported her to Lusaka, arriving at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport at 15:33 hours. An ambulance provided by the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) was ready to take her directly to UTH, where she is now receiving specialized care.
This evacuation highlights the crucial role of the ZFDS in providing emergency medical access to Zambia’s remote regions.
