19th June, 2024
Lecturers at the University of Zambia (UNZA) have demanded that the Government clear dues owed to them, which have accrued over a period of nine years.
These demands were made through their unions this morning, including the University of Zambia and Allied Workers Union (UNZAAWU), University of Zambia Professional Staff Union (UNZAPROSU) – Professional Staff Union and the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) – (Lecturers and Researchers Union).
And speaking on behalf of all the union at the University of Zambia, UNZALARU president professor Andrew Phiri revealed that the lecturers are owed approximately K1.5 million in various benefits and gratuities.
Meanwhile, Professor Phiri emphasized the need for fair treatment and decent working conditions, urging the Government to address the outstanding debt.
The Professor bemoaned what he termed as the unfair treatment for the academicians to continue offering a service without getting their benefits.
However, a high-level meeting is scheduled for this Friday to discuss the matter further, but Professor disclosed that the affected employees will convene on Monday next week awaiting the good news from Government.
