A devastating fire swept through a fish camp on Thursday evening, resulting in the tragic death of one child and leaving two individuals hospitalized.
The blaze, which destroyed approximately 400 makeshift households, ignited when unattended flames in a temporary structure spread rapidly to surrounding grassy homes.
Local authorities and community leaders have expressed their sorrow over the incident, with Council Chairperson Powell Mutenguna urging residents to exercise caution when handling fire.
“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder for our community to prioritize safety and prevent such occurrences in the future,” he stated.
In response to the disaster, the Bweengwa Constituency Development Fund Committee (CDFC) has mobilized quickly to assist the affected families.
CDFC Chairperson Mauldling Chiila announced that an emergency meeting was called to address the immediate needs of those displaced by the fire.
The committee approved the purchase of essential food supplies, including 200 bags of breakfast mealie meal, 200 bottles of cooking oil, and 10 bags of salt from the CDF Disaster Mitigation component.
“We are committed to providing support to the families impacted by this unfortunate event. Our goal is to ensure that they receive the necessary assistance as we work with authorities to find a long-term solution to the challenges they face,” Mr. Chiila said
As efforts continue to provide aid and support to the community, the local authority has assured residents of their commitment to assist those affected by the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
