PRESIDENT HICHILEMA CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE LABOUR SKILLS INVESTMENT

President Hakainde Hichilema says the prevailing Global trends calls for collective investment to attract labour skills by the citizenry contributing to the nation’s aspirations in order to build a prosperous country through skills acquisition, innovation, and hard work.

Speaking on behalf of the President, at the national skills, productivity, and jobs summit, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, said the summit underscores the desire of the Government to address the challenges that have prevented the country to fully harnessing it’s economic potential, hence the need to network and enhance the employability of the youth and improve the livelihoods of the people.

President Hichilema, further said the summit underscores the New Dawn administration’s focus on job creation, skills development, and social equity, perfectly aligned with the Eighth National Development Plan, anchored on the pillars of economic transformation, job creation, and human capital development.

He noticed the engagement will assist to link job seekers with employers both locally and internationally, promote internships, apprenticeships, and industrial attachments, to enhance the workforce skills to meet industry demands.

President Hichilema, said today the challenge is not only to create jobs but to ensure that the workforce is skilled, productive, and to sustain more decent jobs for a prosperous future.

He explained that Zambia’s 2022 recruitment process, particularly in the health and education sectors, recruited over 11,000 of workers, and 30,000 teachers that attracted over 200,000 applicants across the country, this shows that a huge population has limited access to employment opportunities, he hence encouraged skilled young people to export the excess to not only reduce unemployment but also increase Zambia’s influence on Global change as the exported labour will set the country’s flag bearers in development.

He urged the participants to explore advantaged areas of Zambia over other countries and exchange notes to solutions of enhanced employability, such as skills acquisition experience benefits and facilitation of efficient investment for Zambians working in the diaspora.

He said with the fast changing Global economy, skills development are the backbone of productivity, hence the TEVET, and science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) remain vital to plan for the labour market.

Meanwhile, Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati said the transformative capacity to drive economic transformation of job creation relies on skills acquisition that creates change.

He said skills capabilities are inseparable to technologies in the transformative course.

And, International Labour Organisation (ILO) country director representative, said the theme reflects ILO’s mandate to promote the rights to job opportunities in line with Zambia’s Eighth NDP.

The summit is held under the theme, bridging the skills, employment and productivity gap.
