LCC TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY IN SCHOOL ZONES

In a bid to enhance road safety in school zones, Lusaka City Council -LCC has commenced the installation of zebra crossings and 30 km/h speed limit signs along the roads within school zones.

In a statement this morning, LCC public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said through the Department of Engineering, the Local Authority has installed marked crosswalks popularly known as zebra crossings and 30km/h speed limit signs along the roads surrounding St. Patrick Primary School in Kabwata.

She said this important step is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, especially for school-going children.

Ms. Mwamba noted that it is within the local Authority’s mandate to ensure that the roads are maintained not only for smooth transportation but also for safety of both the motorists and pedestrians.

And Ms. Mwamba noted that the Local Authority has continued to work jointly with other stakeholders such as Road Transport and Safety Agency-RTSA and Zambia Road Safety Trust- ZRST and other partners to enhance the public’s adherence to road safety measures and create awareness for motorists to reduce speeds around schools in order to avoid traffic accidents.

She said the campaign, which calls for a 30 km/h speed limit in school zones, highlights the urgent need to protect children traveling to and from school.

Ms. Mwamba has expressed sadness that more than 350 children are involved in fatal traffic accidents each year across the country and many of these occurring during school commutes.

“Therefore, the Local Authority is responsible to ensure that every school in Lusaka has adequate road safety infrastructure, including reduced speed zones, to protect the lives of the most vulnerable road users. We remain committed to expanding the efforts of installing road markings and signages across all schools in Lusaka.” Ms. Mwamba said
