Lusaka City Council-LCC has partnered with a Polish company, LUG to implement a pilot project of public street lights on two selected streets in Lusaka.
The public lighting solution will provide on-grid and off-grid (solar) lighting which has an intergrated smart lighting management system that can create sustainable power supply.
The off-grid, solar powered lighting is made of high quality components and will also cushion the power demand from the national grid.
Additionally, the installation of this smart lighting solution translates into easy access to monitoring and maintenance of the street lights as engineers do not physically need to be on the site to monitor the performance of the lights.
Earlier this year, LUG, presented a proposal to the Local Authority to implement a project for public lighting in the city of Lusaka and it was duly approved by the Council.
The project is scheduled to be implemented before the end of this year.
In preparation ahead of the implementation of the project, LUG paid a curtesy call on the office of the Town Clerk yesterday.
Speaking during the curtesy call, LCC Director of Administration and Human Resource, representing the Town Clerk said Lusaka and the country as whole is in dire need of alternative sources of energy such as solar following the current power deficit.
She said the Local Authority is happy to partner with a specialised company like LUG to illuminate part of the city as it will address the issues of road safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
Meanwhile LUG Light Factory Director, Engineering Markets Mr. Michal Lupkowski said the pilot project for public street lights is a starting point to showcase their high quality products and the company is looking forward to invest on a larger scale in the lighting system in Zambia.
Lusaka City Council is committed to enhance road safety of the residents of Lusaka and improve on measures to reduce road traffic accidents that are attributed to poor or non lighting systems on some roads in the city.
