ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE CALLS FOR CONCERTED EFFORTS ACROSS ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNANCE – HON. MPOSHA.

 

Lusaka, Friday, 12th, July, 2024 – Minister of Green Economy and Environment Hon. Mike Mposha MP says the participation of stakeholders and local communities in tree planting will contribute to improving forest productivity and environmental sustainability.

During the Lusaka South- MEEZ Tree Planting Event in Partnership with Vivo Energy Zambia- LS MFEZ, Lusaka, Hon. Mposha said the planting exercise signifies the commitment to sustainable and environmental conservation by the management of the Lusaka South Multi- Facility Economic Zone in partnership with Vivo Energy that has pledged to donate 10,000 trees to the LS MFEZ.

“This initiative aims to enhance the green spaces within the zone, reduce carbon emissions and promote ecological divesity,” he said in a speech read for him by Director Forestry Mr Sitwala Wamunyima.

He said the Government has demonstrated commitment to protecting forests and environment through enactment of relevant legislation and establishment of institutional frameworks to support the same.

The Honourable Minister said the Government has mandated the Ministry to promote the effective and sustainable use of the environment while at the same time, facilitating support for adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of climate change.

“At the backbone of Forestry Management is a recognition of the role of trees in our society. Trees contribute to the environment by improving air quality, providing oxygen, climate amelioration, preserving soil, conserving water and supporting wildlife,” he said.

“During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe.
We all aware that trees provide many useful products to support our economy and society; timber for construction, furniture, carpentry and flooring as well as paper of all sorts to mention just a few.”

Hon. Mposha said addressing climate change calls for concerted efforts across all levels of governance.

He said the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment stands ready to support and facilitate initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
