CHIKANKATA – Thursday, 14th December, 2023
The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has officially handed over the construction sites for the completion of the new Chikankata district administration block and the Civic Centre, with two high-cost houses, to the Zambia National Service.
The completion of the handed over site is estimated at a total project cost of K15, 054, 352.59 and is expected to be complete in a period of twelve (12) months.
The handover was witnessed by Chikankata Town Council Chairperson, Mr. Conard Ngoma, the District Commissioner, Mr. Timothy Chipolyonga, Council Director of Works, Engineer George Phiri, among other officials.
Speaking during the handover, Director of Public Infrastructure at the Ministry, Mr. Clive Khan says it is the ministry’s intention to ensure that public services are brought as close as possible to the people, in line with the decentralization policy of government.
Mr. Khan has assured the Stakeholders that the ministry will continue with the completion of the houses and the police station in the district once the contentious contractual matters are resolved on the initial contracts.
He says the ministry has all the confidence in the ZNS to undertake the works timely, within the contract cost and with good quality.
The Director of Public Infrastructure has further indicated that the construction to complete new district infrastructure is being undertaken countrywide in a phased manner in line with the availability of resources but with the ultimate aim of completing most of the abandoned new district infrastructure in the next three years.
And Council Chairperson, Mr. Conard Ngoma has expressed gratitude to government for coming to the aid of the district in attending to the infrastructure challenges being faced.
Mr. Ngoma has further appealed to the Ministry to also help look into the matter of sanitation at the new offices as the ministry endeavors to complete the other structures at the site.
Speaking earlier, District Commissioner, Mr. Timothy Chipolyonga says once complete, the new offices will be a relief to government departments, especially the Local Authority, which has been paying huge amounts of money on rentals, which he says, could have been channeled for development in the district.
Meanwhile, the Zambia National Service has promised to deliver quality works within the stipulated time frame.
